Today in unspeakably confusing news, director James Cameron has announced that there will not only be three new Avatar films, but that he’s adding yet another Avatar sequel. That means four Avatar movies are in the pipeline.
Cameron doesn’t do many appearances or interviews, but at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas he revealed that there will be four more installments of the
much beloved high-grossing 2009 film.
“We’re making four epic [Avatar] films that stand alone but together form a saga. These movies were designed to be seen in theaters first,” the director said, according to Deadline.
“I’ve been working with the top four screenwriters and designers in the world to design the world of Avatar going forward,” he said. “The environments, new cultures — whatever it takes to bring it to life. From what I’m seeing of the art on the wall … in pure imagination is just beyond the first film. I’m speechless.”
I’m not sure who is demanding all these new Avatar movies, but Cameron knows best.
In case you can’t even vaguely recall what that movie is about there’s a trailer for the original below. It’s amazing how few people can recall anything at all about Avatar. It’s the highest grossing film ever at $2.7 billion worldwide.
Currently, Avatar 2 is set to be released in December 2019. Sequels will also come in December 2020, 2022, and 2023.
